About
Nestled in the heart of Richmond, BC, Shibuyatei Japanese Restaurant offers a delectable journey into authentic Japanese cuisine. With a prime location at 2971 Sexsmith Rd, this charming eatery is the epitome of a hidden gem, delivering exceptional flavors and an intimate dining experience. The atmosphere here is imbued with nostalgia, thanks in part to the owner - a seasoned chef with roots in a renowned ramen shop in Tokyo's Shibuya district during the '70s and '80s.
As I stepped into Shibuyatei, I was greeted by a cozy setting animated by old Japanese food shows playing in the background. It was a warm reminder of the chef’s rich history and culinary passion. The dishes here tell stories of tradition and dedication, and it's not uncommon to find the owner crafting each plate with meticulous care. From the beloved Gyoza selections, offering Pork, Chicken & Cheese, Prawn, and Scallop options, to the impeccable Dx Seafood Katsu Curry Rice, there's a taste to please every palette.
One standout dish is the chef's specialty, the Larmen. Several reviews highlight its authenticity, transporting diners back to the streets of Japan. Made with premium ingredients sourced directly from Japan, each bowl is evident of the chef's deep commitment to quality over quantity. It's this attention to detail that truly elevates the dining experience. While some guests have noted that the flavors may feel subtle compared to other establishments, it’s this purity and the absence of MSG that allow each individual ingredient to shine.
The Gyoza Set, impressively priced and full of flavor, acted as a perfect companion to the delightful ramen. The crunchy yet tender dumplings tantalize the taste buds, offering a satisfying texture that enhances the meal. It's clear that pride and love are infused in every aspect of the cuisine at Shibuyatei.
The single-owner operation does come with its quirks; service may be leisurely, but this only adds to the warm, homey feel of the restaurant. The owner often engages in conversations about his journey and culinary heritage, creating a connection with diners that you simply won't find in corporate chains.
In a world where speed often trumps savor, Shibuyatei Japanese Restaurant embodies the essence of patience rewarded, with each dish being a labor of love. If you’re seeking an authentic Japanese meal filled with heart and tradition, be sure to visit this charming eatery before it fades into memory. As customer reviews suggest, this is not just a meal; it's an experience that stays with you long after the last bite.
“ This one man (76 years young) operation may be a bit slow for many people in this day and age but the dining experience is worth it. The shop owner who owned and operated a sophisticated ramen shop in Tokyo, Shibuya area in the 70s-80s has old Japanese food shows running on the tv. Most of these episodes feature him and his ramen bowls. The contrast of the young face on the tv and the man standing in front of you is almost symbolic of all that experience you are about to taste in your bowl. This humble old man tells us that his ramen is for the common folks and not the gourmets of the likes of Anthony Bourdain. Oh is he wrong, because the amount of pride and love that goes into his food is obvious from your first bite. When visiting, please have patience and it will be rewarded. ”
“ Great cozy hole in the wall that is easily overlooked. I got the curry katsu rice and some pork gyoza, and they both tasted great! The food can come across as a little bland compared to other shops, but the shop adheres well to its "no MSG" promise and you can taste each individual ingredient. The service is excellent, especially considering the owner is a one man show. You can expect the typical high quality Japanese hospitality here. While the restaurant itself has non-typical furnishings, it is a delight to be able to see the owner make your homemade meal. Overall, definitely a great spot for a true Japanese meal, and I am definitely returning back soon to try the ramen here. ”
“ Went here for lunch after reading some reviews. This an amazing place. The food is well priced and delicious. Wasn't busy so the owner, who is also the cook/server, came over and had a chat with us about his experiences and his story. He has such love for his craft. Only sourcing premium ingredients from Japan and wanting to produce quality over quantity, just for his love of food. Informed us he is closing up shop at the end of August, which is disappointing but all the more reason to come back before it's gone. Highly recommended. ”
“ An absolute gem of a restaurant on the outskirts of Richmond. The chef/owner specializes primarily in Ramen (what he calls “Larmen”) and gyoza. His ramen was even featured by the most famous Japanese food reviewer in Japan! Every meal I’ve had has transported me back to Japan. It is clear to me that the owner cares deeply about creating quality food. ”
“ Been here a couple of times and the larmen has never disappointed. For those looking for authentic Japanese food in a mom-and-pop (in this case, a one-man show) restaurant from a different time and place, this is your spot. For those looking for an upscale dining experience and attentive service, it’s best to look elsewhere. ”
“ This restaurant is a gem. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked. The gyoza were better than anything I’ve had in Japan. The owner is lovely and passionate about his craft. Take the time to say hello. He is lovely and so is his food. ”
“ I went there for dinner. There’s no guest but me and my partner. I read a post on social media about here. It’s a restaurant run by one Japanese Chef. Yes, there is no waiter, no cashier, no helper. Don’t expect anything but amazing food. The menu is all there on the counter, some with faded pictures, but if you’re reading this, you can check other reviews for images of the food. I should go there earlier. According to the conversation between me and the owner, he stopped making sushi. Few people can understand his food and admire his spirit. Every dish is made there in the restaurant not bought from wholesale or supermarkets. I understand that no service or long waiting time makes people not returning here, but I will go again and again to watch the chef show and amaze my tongue. ”
“ So glad we decided to go here tonight, the ramen was amazing, such fresh and authentic flavours. We also had gyoza and crumbed prawns which were also delicious. The owner was very nice and shared some interesting stories. Highly recommend for authentic home style Japanese food. ”
